The best FoV (Field of View) for Apex Legends
To determine the best Field of View in Apex Legends, I have surveyed 100 players on their preference. Find out pros and cons brought by a wide FoV.
There is not a best setting for the field of view, but it comes down to your personal preference, the size of your screen and how close you are to it.
You may think to the FoV as a camera zooming in and out. When you increase the FoV, the camera zooms out, improving your peripheral vision.
FoV pros and cons
According to the PC gaming myth, a high FoV value is always the best choice in shooters because you are able to look at a wider area, which helps to spot any incoming enemy.
The truth is that a high FoV brings both pros and cons.
A high FoV makes targeting more difficult. The wider the FoV, the smaller the enemy on the screen, so you need to be more accurate to hit them.
A low FoV helps your focus. Everything on the screen is bigger, so it is easier to focus on where you are aiming.
I suggest using a very-high FoV (110) only if you have a great sight and reflexes. Generally, playing on a wide FoV also requires a higher mouse sensitivity in order to move faster across the screen, so you need a solid aim as well.
Instead, If you struggle at spotting and aiming enemies at a mid and long range, a lower field of view value will benefit your gameplay.
Very-low FoV values can also bring motion sickness and issues in close quarters combat as it is harder to keep a fast-moving target on your screen.
With a high FoV it is simpler to spot and keep track of enemies. Usually, you also feel like you are moving faster, which is a nice effect :P.
I have surveyed 100 PC players on their Field of View preference in Apex Legends. The results are displayed in the graph and table below.
The table is responsive. If you are using a phone, turn it sideways for a full view. Otherwise, zoom in or click the grey area to swipe it.
| FoV | Votes | FoV | Votes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 | 4 | 100 | 14 |
| 84 | 6 | 102 | 4 |
| 85 | 4 | 103 | 2 |
| 88 | 2 | 104 | 12 |
| 90 | 26 | 105 | 2 |
| 94 | 4 | 106 | 4 |
| 95 | 2 | 110 | 14 |
The great majority of the players utilizes a 90 FoV, which is the standard recommended by the game developers for an optimal experience and to avoid potential graphic bugs.
Only a limited amount of players decided to decrease the FoV, and 80 is the lowest value registered.
100, 104, and 110 are the most popular choices among those who love a wide FoV. As far as I know, 104 and 110 are also the values suggested by many pro players in other shooter games.
Finally, if performance is an issue, be aware that increasing the FoV will impact negatively your fps because your PC must work harder to render more on the screen.
FoV on ultrawide monitors
The 21:9 support in Apex Legends is excellent (similarly to Titanfall 2 and most EA games), and I believe this aspect ratio brings a huge advantage because it improves your view on the surroundings.
I play on a 34 inches ultrawide monitor at about 50-60 Centimeters / 1.6-1.9 Feet of distance, so I can share with you my personal experience.
The standard 90 FoV works well, and after several tests I believe 90 and 100 are the best options. Considering the 21:9 display ratio, ultrawide users already enjoy a huge horizontal view.
I have also noticed the fisheye lens effect at 110 FoV, and it really bugs me while playing.
The Fisheye effect is a strong visual distortion that in photography is produced with an ultra wide-angle lens. You can occur in it on PC when using a very-high FoV value. Some players tolerate or don’t mind it, others (like me) just can’t stand it :).
FoV at 16:9 and 21:9
Below, you can find images of the same scene at 70, 90, and 110 FoV, both in 16:9 and 21:9 aspect ratio. I have used the tutorial level because there are no private lobbies in Apex Legends.
I couldn’t find a way to hide the HUD, so I have simply used the “inspect weapon animation” by clicking N. Unfortunately, it doesn’t hide also the tutorial.
The 16.9 monitor is a standard 24 inches one with a resolution of 1920×1080, while the ultrawide one is a 34 inches display that runs at 2560×1080.
Best FOV for Apex Legends on PS4, Xbox and PC
Published: 25/Oct/2020 13:04
Having the perfect setup is one of the keys to victory in Apex Legends, with FOV being a hotly debated topic every season. So, we’ve got the best FOV settings that could change the game for you.
There are plenty of factors that go into having success in Apex Legends. Of course, you need to pick the right Legend for your playstyle, find strong weapons and attachments, and have some luck with the safe zone.
Outside of those, you also need to get settings that fit too. This laundry list of options includes the FOV, or Field of View, that allows you to see more, or less if you want, of the action depending on what feels comfortable.
It’s an adjustable setting, so depending on the day, you might decide to try something else. So, if you want to make a tweak, we’ve got a few options that will fit a few different playstyles.
105 FOV
Most players might see the FOV setting and quickly bump it up so that they can see everything, and while that doesn’t work for everyone, it is a viable option.
In that case, you’ll want to bump it up to around 105, because you’ll be able to see players clearly on both the right and left side of the screen, while also retaining a somewhat central feeling to your FOV.
It will have a slight drawback if you’re fighting at range because it won’t give you that tunnel vision-like feeling of a lower setting, but if you’re playing with a higher FOV, that’s unlikely to be your playstyle anyway. If you sit physically farther away from your TV/monitor, this very wide FOV will make it trickier for you to spot targets far in the distance.
90 FOV
Setting your FOV to 90 is perfect if you want to strike a balance between fighting at both long and short-range as it offers good vision for both.
Going with 90 doesn’t give you the tunnel vision-like feeling of slightly lower settings, and is a bit more natural than reaching 100 or even going beyond that. You’ll feel like whatever enemy you’re targeting is in the middle of your view at all times.
70-75 FOV
Now, if you want something that is very long-range focused, going between 70-75 is the best option, regardless of whether you’re on PC or a console.
Yes, you won’t be able to see everything to your side, of course, but everything that appears at distance will be more central in your view rather than just being a speck of dust in some others.
Just like having a favorite legend and weapon, setting the FOV is a personal choice and, yes, you can follow pro players, but what works for them might not work for everyone.
A higher FOV can also reduce frame rate, so if you’re not on a powerful PC setup, you may notice reduced FPS on a higher FOV setting.
But, it might be worth giving these different values a try to see if it improves your game and helps you pick up more wins than before.
GAMERS DECIDE
So you have no idea where to start with your video settings? Or maybe, like me, you just keep missing your shots and you’re searching for any way to get that advantage. Changing your field of view (FOV) settings can give you a massive advantageover other players.
I know it’s stating the obvious, but the main benefit of increasing your FOV is that you can keep an eye on more of your surroundings at once. You reduce your chance of being snuck up on or not noticing that third party waiting in the corner, you can combine a wide FOV with good positioning and easily keep track of all your enemies at once.
Sounds good right? But it’s not as clear cut as «wide FOV equals success», some players may find it beneficial to keep a low FOV. I’ll explain that too.
Pros and cons
Low FOV (70)
Best choice for newer players.
The default FOV for Apex Legends is 70, this means that you are getting the narrowest possible view of your game. Having that narrow view will lower your awareness and put you at a disadvantage to players with a high FOV, as they may see you before they come into view on your screen.
It’s not all bad though. Low FOV has the lowest level of visual distortion. For newer players this can help you hone your aim to perfection as you won’t have to worry about targets shrinking/growing while you track them.
Medium FOV (90)
Best choice for FPS lovers.
If you’re an experienced player and you’re confident in your ability to beam targets at close and medium ranges, this is going to be your happy middle ground. You have a moderate jump in visibility which will help your situational awareness and speed up that early game looting.
Beware though, targets start to become distorted at close range when moving your aim quickly. If you’re up for the challenge, the payoffs can be big.
High FOV (110)
Best choice for competitive players with high end machines.
Do you consistently hit your shots? Do you one clip enemies like it’s nothing? Then this is the one for you. The highest FOV is best kept for pro players because of the distortion/fisheye lens effect that makes it a lot harder to successfully track targets and control recoil.
Targets will shrink so much that you might consider getting your eyes checked, and the huge amount of visual information can be a little overloading at first. But don’t worry! Stick it out, adjust over time and you are guaranteed to see the benefits.
Medium low (80)
Novice players with less powerful machines.
So you’ve been playing consistently for a couple weeks now, your movement feels faster, your aim is getting better and you can handle the high stress third parties like a true warrior. Why not bump it up a notch? This setting gives you a little more visual input to deal with and will make everything feel just a little snappier, you will see minimal impact to your performance too.
Medium high (100)
Experienced, non-competitive players.
If you’re the kind of player that downloaded the game on day one and you’ve been semi consistent ever since, this is best for you. Playing at slightly under max FOV will prevent targets from being overly distorted but will still have you snapping between enemies like it’s nothing. Expect some downgrades in performance for mid level PC’s (consoles will see no difference as FPS is capped).
Best FOV Setting for Apex Legends
Apex Legends has a variety of settings which can enhance your experience. FOV is one of them, but what’s the best number to have it at?
Apex Legends has a variety of settings for players to customize the experience to their liking completely. This is great, especially when it comes to FOV, as even console players can change this setting to give them the best advantage possible.
Apex Legends developers, Respawn Entertainment, are known for their great communication with their players, implementing requested changes, and even settings, which was again seen in the latest quality-of-life changes detailed in the Season 10 patch.
Unlike many other games, most Apex Legends settings that we see on PC are also on consoles, allowing controller players a wide variety of options to compete with those on more powerful hardware systems. For those unaware, this also goes for FOV, which could be a game-changer for your experience in Apex Legends if you haven’t customized it yet.
What is FOV?
FOV stands for field of view, which is essentially the size of the viewing angle on the screen. If this setting is higher, it will allow for a bigger viewing angle, letting players see more around them. If this setting is lower, it will decrease the viewing angle.
The default FOV on Apex Legends is set to 70, which to most experienced players is extremely low. The setting goes all the way up to 110.
What Apex Legends FOV setting is best?
Depending on your setup, the sweet spot or best FOV seems to be between 96 and 104. If you play on a bigger TV, you’re going to want to have your FOV on the higher end of the scale, as the bigger screen will allow you to still see up to longer ranges even with a higher FOV.
Of course, like all settings, it’s completely up to preference and your setup. However, one obvious thing is anything under 70 FOV is a huge disadvantage, as it will completely limit your ability to read what’s going on around you.
A high FOV on a smaller screen or monitor may distort your viewing and prevent you from seeing things at longer ranges, so in this case, you may want to keep your FOV in the 90s.
Ultimately, having your FOV between 90-104 will put you at an advantage over those with the default or lower, as you will be able to see more on the screen and react much quicker to situations.
Lower FOV’s can feel too zoomed in and restricted, but FOV’s that are too high can feel too distant, so find what works best for you.
After setting a new, higher FOV, you may also want to play around with your sensitivity and increase that, too, as these settings scale, and a higher FOV might make your original sensitivity feel too slow.
